Groundhog Day falls halfway between the winter solstice and the vernal equinox, apparently tracing its heritage to ancient midwinter festivals.
As I noted recently,
Tu Bishvat is similarly intended to fall just prior to the middle of winter.
Which do I prefer? Outside my window, the hills are green and many of the trees bear leaves and flowers. Take that, Pennsylvania!

That's why I live in CA, the weather among many other reasons.
You can't even trust the almond blossoms; our tree, by the fron door blooms for Purim usually.

Guess it's just too cold up in the Samaritan highlands. We've had blooming almonds since early January.
